| Dormitoryo! |
Two interesting directorial touches show Arman Reyes' artistic potential. In one sequence, the dorm residents are usually noisy. Having repeatedly failed to study in the past, Alex (Arnold Gamboa) is about to give up all hope of learning his lessons. One of the residents is reading a book entitled Amok. The book's title of course, describes the action in the sequence. Another such directorial touch involves the use of a quick cut to show time lapse. Gil, walking home, exhausted from his job meets the neighborhood pushers. He looks at the face of one of the men, and the face suddenly turns to his own. In the very next sequence, Gil is already the university's established drug pusher. Time lapse was successfully shown through a simple cut. Nevertheless, Dormitoryo! rings several false notes. Cynthia's (Lorna Tolentino) subplot which tries to exploit that over-exploited Filipino situation, the rich girl falling for poor boy Oscar (Mark Gil) is unnecessary. Tolentino appears on the screen so infrequently and her role is so patently absurd that the film would have been much better without her.

Hi Jojo,
Thanks for the review. How is this film compared to Bedspacers?

Hello Ron,
Dormitoryo is much better than Bedspacers in my opinion. It may tackle the same subject matter but the former was more brave to include drug addiction as the film's subplot...

Hello Jojo!
I thought at first, Dormitoryo was a fun teen school flick given the title's font and subtitle. Until it was really a drama that focuses on 'buhay estudyante'. I just don't really get the use of an exclamation point for a very simple noun like this movie's title.
By the way, the cast is very impressive. Surprising to see Roderick in the cast. Is he the obligatory comic relief in the movie?
I'm surprised you like this better than Bedspacers. I like the latter a lot. Mark Gil's performance in Bedspacers is seamless in my book.

Kumusta Dennis,
It's a much better film in terms of material since it was based on several short stories written by Agapito Joaquin. Of the entire cast lutang talaga si Ariosto Reyes, Jr. simply because his character is well written and fully fleshed out. Sana naalagaan din yung story ni Arnold Gamboa while Roderick was added mostly for comedic effect. Mark Gil was better in Bedspacers than in Dormitoryo. The subplot about him and Ricky Davao could've been interesting kung napagtuunan lang sana ng pansin...

Thanks for the insights Jojo not only for the blog review itself. I gather na kuha nga pala sa short stories according sa info mo. This could've been better perhaps if this an all-male cast, meaning no female character whatsoever. You mentioned about Lorna's inconsistent appearance of her character and the film could still do without her.
By the way, I believe this is Alfie Anido's only non-Regal film appearance.

Anytime Dennis! The film was based on several short stories condensed into one film. You're right! It would've been better without a female character. Desisyon siguro ng producer to cast Lorna dahil big star siya and it will help sa box office take ng pelikula, Unfortunately, hindi naman nakatulong and it was still a disappointment sa takilya. Dormitoryo was indeed Alfie's only film outside of Regal...
