Sabik Kasalanan Ba? (RJR Films International / Fantasy Films, International). This Lito de Guzman movie tells the story of Celia (Joy Sumilang), a young woman whose thirst was quenched by her stepfather, Miguel (George Estregan). She marries Mario (Tani Cinco), a workaholic who has been neglecting his wife's sexual needs. She then has an affair with Edgar (Gino Antonio), her husband's best friend until he mysteriously dies of food poisoning. In this, as in other porno films that followed, the screenplay failed to give the moviegoer any insight into the human situation, but merely provides a framework, an excuse for the several protracted episodes of torrid lovemaking, between Celia and her husband, and later her lover. Characterization is not taken seriously. In fact, only one aspect of Celia's character is given, without any explanation, she is obsessed with sex, sex and more sex. Mario and Edgar, on the other hand are nothing but studs, who alternate in feeding this insatiable Venus fly-trap. Lighting merely provides ample illumination for the love scenes, while the camera is perennially angled to highlight the acrobatics of fornication. Editing prolongs love scenes beyond logic and human endurance, while the moans and shrieks of orgasm are magnified to decibels fit for the deaf and dumb. Pornography and art are mutually exclusive of each other, and what is often called erotic art is really just well-made, or artistically executed pornography. Penekula openly pretends to be art and does not seem to succeed in whole or in part as an art film.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I've always wanted to write about the pene movies from the mid-80's since Philippine Cinema won't be complete without them. Most pene actors started making penekula first then eventually went on to do other films as well. George Estregan, Dick Israel, Tani Cinco, Gino Antonio even Paquito and Romy Diaz would be some of the actors who juggled between making mainstream and pene movies.

I'm suprised you haven't seen any of the pene movies but you know almost all of the actors who appeared in them. There was a penetration scene in Dingding Lang Ang Pagitan between Olivia Ortiz and Albert Eugenio but it wasn't a part of the main feature. Karga is a term used when all the pene scenes in the movie were shown after the film itself. By November of 1986, the Censors decided to shorten the sex scenes from pene movies that's why they would show it in provinces and second run theaters with the extra scenes intact after the movie.
As far as I know, Cherrie Madrigal appeared last year in Imoral, an indie film. Maureen Mauricio is still around playing Francine Prieto's mother in Liberated. Cristina Crisol has gained so much weight lives in Cavite with her husband while Lala Montelibano is now a registered nurse much like her daughter. I'm not sure what Greggy Liwag or Myra Manibog is doing these days. Mark Joseph from what I heard is now a Physical Therapist.

Jojo - I got distracted on your choice of screen shot. Hope you can change it for your younger readers or at least have some kind of "graphic warning." Anyway, I know its an ongoing debate is skin flicks are considered art or not. Though I am leading towards the latter, I can't deny that these types of film is part of our movie history - every generation has a different terms for this category, and critics considers some of them as groundbreaking. Whatever happened to the Board of Censors? Does the current regulatory board functions the same?

I'm sorry Jason if you were distracted by my screencaps... I just wanted to emphasize the message of my post about pornography since I was discussing the kind of movies shown after the EDSA revolt. The censors is now the Movie and Telelevision Review and Classifications Board. Unlike the censors back then, they merely classify films and grant them an appropriate rating. They rarely cut scenes depicting graphic sex or violence if they are within the limits set by the MTRCB. Again, my sincerest apologies for the screencaps.

Bomba films from the late 60's and early 70's have been discussed in magazines and journals during that time why not the pene movies of the mid 80's? As far as I know there are nbo existing prints of these films that's probably why they are not being released on DVD.

It would be difficult to single out the highest grossing pene movie since most of these films were shown in relatively small and second run movie houses around Metro Manila and the provinces where they made the most money. I would say Sabik followed closely by Hindi Mapigil Ang Init.

Ronaldo Valdez never appeared in a pene movie. The photo you mentioned is from the film Mga Nakaw Na Sandali with Maria Isabel Lopez which was an ultra bold film just like Company Of Women but there was no actual penetration.
I remember Michael Alfers, he used the screen name Franco Madrigal in his first pene movie Killer: Aids followed by Night Swimming G.I. Baby and Sukdulan. He was a ramp model before he joined the movies. His career was short lived since his appearance in pene movies affected his modelling career as well.

Yup thats the one. An uncut english dubbed version of Gisingin has popped up online under the title Monica. What is odd is that the names of the cast and crew have been changed and they added scenes showing the streets of Hong Kong or China to make it appear as if the film was set there.

I was fortunate enough to own a copy on a Betamax tape, until my father claimed it to supposedly prevent me from pornography since I was only 13 at that time.

I saw Karma during the 1981 MMFF. Vilma's breast exposure was a long shot and was shortened by the censors it was more like a quick flash, blink and you'll miss the entire scene. Laurice Guillen had some steamy sex scenes with Johnny Delgado in Brocka's Init while Charo Santos was at her boldest in Kontrobersyal although at one paint she claimed that it was a body double. In my opinion Pilar Pilapil's burlesk number towards the climax of her episode in Mga Huwad Na Mananayaw rivals that of Vilma's climactic dance sequence in Burlesk Queen. Laurice did play a stripper in Brocka's Lunes, Martes, Miyerkoles, Huwebes, Biyernes, Sabado, Linggo but there's hardly any nudity in it.

Anyway, I have to ask since you wrote it: Why was Sabik... the most controversial of all the pene films? Was it groundbreaking at that time? Wasn't it being a pene film controversial to begin with? Any purported backstories?

You're one of the lucky few who saw Sabik online, Etchie... The reason why the film was controversial was the fact that it starred Joy Sumilang who was rumored to be the daughter of then matinee idol Romeo Vasquez added to the fact that she decided to really g all the way in this film. The very first penekula was Hindi Mapigil Ang Init which starred Myra Manibog although it didn't get as much publicity as Sabik.

Many years ago, I saw the VHS version of "GI Baby" with Cherie Madrigal.
The full pene versions between Cherrie and Dick Israel was the VERY END or AFTER CREDITS..including the full pene scene of Sheila Munoz and Mark Joseph. I have been looking for that original version for a very long time. The late 80's had the best scenes that even the 90's could never match. What an era..

The original video release of Sabik had the pene scenes intact throughout the movie same with Hindi Mapigil Ang Init. It was later that the distributors thought of editing all the sex scenes together and showed them at the end of each screening hence the term "karga" which carried over to the movies' home video version.
There were also some pane movies shown with what they called "singit" where they would show sex scenes with the same actors taken from an entirely different movie...
